“The choice of the bluest blue, will easily find agreement.
Josef Albers in his book: Interaction of Color
Disagreement must be expected with the eight reds.”
My favourite colour researcher is Ellen Marx. Her visual research into how colours interact continues to amaze me every time. Her colour research has given me a few extra senses that make me extra sensitive to colour perception. If you would ask her to say something about the colour combination red and blue, she says: first show me which colour you mean by red? Then we’ll talk about the blue afterwards.
I was reminded of this when I reread Derek Jarman’s ‘Chroma’. (Someone who, by the way, would ask about your blue first and then tell you something about the corresponding red). In his chapter on Red, he quotes the famous quote from colour researchers Anni Albers and Josef Albers:
“The choice of the bluest blue, will easily find agreement.
Disagreement must be expected with the eight reds.”
Quote from Josef Albers’ famous book -Interaction of Color-.
Do you know who is first for you? The Red or the Blue?
